THE
WAKEFIELD & DISTRICT RADIO SOCIETY - AMATEUR RADIO LICENCE TRAINING
The Wakefield & District
Radio Society is pleased to announce the provision of Amateur Radio Training
Courses
from Foundation, through
Intermediate to Advanced (Full).
The training department
was originally run by John Carter G7JTH, who, at the ripe old age of 70, has
finally
decided to retire. The "reins" have been handed over to Dave Lockwood G4CLI.
The Society in general
and Dave in particular wish John all the best in his retirement, although he has
decided
to continue as Society
Treasurer, and to spend more time servicing his main obsession, Just Taking
Holidays. (HI!)
The Society is also
pleased to announce that John has just become a grandfather as his daughter
Anne
recently gave birth to a son (Jake). We do not yet know when Jake will be
enrolling on a foundation course HI!
The training team comprises four RSGB/RCF
registered
instructors, with more in training:
-
Dave Lockwood G4CLI (Head of Training and Lead Instructor,
Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced)
-
Darryl Burden 2E0DJB (Instructor, Foundation)
-
Robert Harrison 2E0RJH (Instructor,
Foundation)
-
Dave Evans G0EVA (Instructor, Foundation,
Intermediate and Advanced)
The team also includes regular assistance
from the Chairman, Ken Quinn 2E0SSQ, Steve Thompson 2E0SLT (as invigilators)
and Sarah Thornton M3WUC as Exam Secretary.
Our courses run at all three levels on a
regular basis and are usually held at our HQ at
253 Barnsley Road,
Wakefield, WF1 5NU but other venues can be
arranged if sufficient numbers are interested.
Course prices and durations (assuming one
lesson per week) are as follows:
-
Foundation £60 (5-6 weeks)
-
Intermediate £70 (10-12 weeks)
-
Advanced £80 (26-30 weeks)
The course fees include the exam fee, one
years' full membership of the Wakefield & District Radio Society (needed for
insurance
purposes - continuation after the end of the course requires committee approval in the normal way) and an amount for administration,
photocopying and refreshments. If you are already a member, discounts are
available.
Our track record is impressive, with over
one hundred candidates trained with only two failures!
If you would like to apply to be trained,
you can download an application form

The latest courses to be announced are:
Foundation Course - Commencing in
February 2010 for six weeks, lead instructor Darryl Burden 2E0DJB
Advanced Course - Commencing
20:00 on Thursday, 4th February 2010 for the June 17th Exam, lead instructor,
Dave Evans G0EVA
Syllabuses and the like are
available from an external site, accessible from
our links and downloads page.
Photos from some of these courses
(including a recent success with Clayton West Scouts) are shown below.
As normal, you may click on an image for a full-size
photo in a new window.
Disability is no barrier to an amateur radio
licence - we have trained several candidates who have reading and/or learning
difficulties
and two candidates who are completely blind,
including Louise Simpson
who is now M3WSQ.
She swears she's not going
to use the phonetics "White Stick Queen"!
To request further
details, or to "book" a place on a course, please contact the Head of Training
who can provide you with all the
details. Dave can be contacted either by email (click the name above),
by telephone (07748 221855)
or snail mail at 75, Foxroyd Lane Estate, Dewsbury, WF12 0BB.
Photos of
some of the aspiring (or should it be
perspiring?) M3's are shown below attempting to erect an
aerial system outside
our headquarters, where most of the courses
are conducted. No names are included to protect the guilty!
